An excellent 19th century micro mosaic panel/plaque

depicting Temple of Vesta in the Roman Forum.

The mosaic is on a black base with micro pieces of glass a process called tesserae.

Using hundreds of micro pieces of glass in multiple colours and shades the Italian artists formed a picture in mosaic form.

These were then sold to Victorian grand tour visitors to Italy. This particular grand tour mosaic is of Temple of Vesta in the Roman Forum.

The ancient Roman temple was dedicated to the goddess Vesta, who represented the domestic hearth, home, and family.

It is distinctive for its circular shape, which is thought to represent the design of early Roman huts and housed the sacred eternal flame of Vesta, symbolizing the perpetuity of the Roman State.

The Vestal Virgins, a college of priestesses, were responsible for maintaining the sacred fire, which was believed to guarantee the goddess's protection and the enduring strength of Rome.
